The Diagnostic Reading Analysis (DRA) is a simple-to-administer individual reading test, suitable for pupils aged from 7 to 16 years. It comprises two elements:- a listening comprehension task, where the pupil listens to a short passage read by the administrator and then answers spoken questions about it;
- a reading assessment, giving measure of accuracy, fluency/reading rate and comprehension and comprehension processing speed. The reading assessment involves the pupil in reading both fiction and non-fiction passages and then answering questions about them. The questions are asked and answered orally.
There are two alternate, or parallel forms (A and B) of the reading passages, which are carefully matched in content, interest and difficulty. This allows a pupil to be assessed more than once within a school year, and enables progress to be measured.
